HENRY GOODHIND was born on August 22, 1834 in Cullompton, Devonshire, England. Also known as ‘Harry,’ he entered the Port of New York on June 20, 1859 aboard the ship Rhine, eventually landing in Hartford, CT. Not only did he come with his own family, consisting of his wife, Eliza and their 18 month old son, Henry (also called Harry), but also with them was FREDERICK, Henry’s brother, and his young bride of two weeks, Eliza (Martin).

According to her death certificate, Eliza (Bleeze) Goodhind was born at Bromley Heath, England on February 14, 1839, and died in Housatonic, MA (a part of Great Barrington) on June 5, 1928.

[Aunt Rose seemed to think that Henry had worked at Windsor Locks, CT before moving to Housatonic. Aunt Eliza's death record states that she had lived in Housatonic 68 years. Their home was on the side of an abrupt hill in the center of town. Aunt Rose said Henry came with some cash, which he loaned to the government during the Civil War at good interest. -AMS]

Henry became a naturalized citizen on July 21, 1882 at Superior Court, Berkshire County, Pittsfield, MA. He was a papermaker here in America, as he had been in England. There is a family tradition that the brothers brought with them a papermaking ‘recipe’ that proved very successful for them. Henry died on December 24, 1910 in Housatonic. Both he and Eliza are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Housatonic.

Henry and Eliza had four children:

A.  HENRY C. GOODHIND, also known as Harry, was born November 28, 1857 in England. He was a papermaker, like his father.  He married Fanny A. Brewer (born 1863 in Tyringham, MA) on October 30, 1880 in Great Barrington, MA. Harry became a naturalized citizen on Nov. 26, 1883 at Superior Court, Berkshire County, Pittsfield, MA. Henry moved to Connecticut some time after his marriage.

[Henry's greeting to his mother for her birthday was dated Manchester, CT, giving no data whatsoever. -AMS]

Harry died on August 17, 1930 in Manchester, CT from a fractured skull after having been struck by a car on the highway; he was 72.  Fanny died on July 21, 1951.  Harry and Fanny are buried in Buckland Cemetery, Manchester, Hartford County, CT.  They had one daughter:

1.  BERTHA MAY GOODHIND was born January 3, 1885 in Great Barrington, MA. She never married.  Bertha died on November 12, 1956; she is buried with her parents in Manchester, CT

(I am sure she spent her last days with her cousin Cora (daughter of FREDERICK) in Unionville, CT. -AMS)

B.  MARY ANN ("Molly") GOODHIND was born December 4, 1859 in Dalton (Aunt Rose had said Eliza had gone to stay with friends) and died in Springfield on February 6, 1953. She married William Henry Brown (born about 1858 in Stockport, Cheshire, England), who died January 3, 1936. They lived in Housatonic, just below her parents on the main road. They are both buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Housatonic.

[Aunt Rose corresponded with an Annie Brown in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England about Molly, and later I took over. Annie wrote that Will was born in Stockport, Cheshire, son of Cain Brown: "They migrated to the U.S. when the cotton famine was very bad in the 60's taking sons John, James and William Henry. They had three more children in America." Mary Ann's son George gave no information in the birthday letter, not even an address. A note in my mother's handwriting stated that his wife was Laura Nicolai, and that in 1916 they had a small daughter. -AMS)

1.  GEORGE HENRY BROWN was born in November 13, 1880 and died in Springfield, MA in 1960. George was an electrician. He married L. A. Laura Nicolai (born 1883 in Great Barrington) on July 3, 1911 in Great Barrington, MA. Laura died in 1973. They are both buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Housatonic. They evidently had a daughter.

C.  WILLIAM GOODHIND was born June 1, 1861 in Housatonic and died May 5, 1936 in Northampton, MA. He married Elizabeth Mary Snyder on July 15, 1883 in Hinsdale, NY. She was born in Alford (or possibly West Stockbridge) on April 22, 1866 and died October 11, 1948 in West Springfield. William and Elizabeth had three children:

1.  MILDRED E GOODHIND was born on April 4, 1897 in Holyoke, MA. She died on August 16, 1897 at 4 months, 12 days old due to malassimilation

2.  RUTH HOYT GOODHIND was born December 21, 1897 in Holyoke. She married Harry L. Trask of Danvers, MA on July 8, 1918 in Spartanburg, SC. Harry died on August 20, 1971 in Manchester, CT.  Ruth passed away in Windsor, Ct on July 18, 1998.

a.  GERALDINE ELIZABETH TRASK was born July 14, 1921 in Springfield. She married Walter Viklinetz (born September 28, 1918 in East Hartford, CT) on May 6, 1944 in Hartford, CT. In 1994, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Windsor, CT.   Geraldine passed away on November 15, 1997 in Windsor, CT.   Walter passed on October 5, 2003 in Windsor as well.

On November 24, 1920, he married Beatrice Eleanor Barrus (of Springfield), who had been born in Haydenville on September 6, 1901; Eleanor passed away on March 24, 2003 in Springfield.  . Leslie entered a nursing home in 1988; he died on July 13, 1990 in Holyoke. Leslie and Beatrice had two children:

a.  MARJORIE BEATRICE GOODHIND was born August 4, 1921 in Springfield. She married George Francis Condon of Springfield (born August 12, 1917) on April 7, 1945. George died August 16, 1964. Marjorie and George had three children:

1)  KENNETH GEORGE CONDON

2)  JOAN ELIZABETH CONDON

3)  BRUCE DOUGLAS CONDON

b.  ROBERT LESLIE GOODHIND was born April 1, 1926 in Springfield. He married Shirley Patricia Looney, born April 24, 1925 in Chicopee on June 7, 1947.  Patricia passed away on October 29, 2007.  They had one son:

1)  ALAN ROBERT GOODHIND

4.  RACHEL MARTIN GOODHIND was born September 3, 1901 in West Springfield. She died in a convalescent home after a long illness on April 26, 1985 in West Springfield.

D.  ELIZABETH GOODHIND was born October 3, 1862 and died March 29, 1932, presumably in Housatonic. She married William Henry Snyder, brother to her brother William's wife, on October 30, 1880. William was born on December 6, 1861 in Ghent, NY and died August 24, 1947. Records indicate that he and Elizabeth were married in Great Barrington together with Elizabeth’s brother Harry and his wife, Fanny (Brewer). They owned and operated a large general store in Housatonic at the foot of the hill where Elizabeth’s parents lived.  In the 1920 federal census of Great Barrington, we find William H. Snyder (58), a merchant in a general store, his wife Elizabeth H. (58), a saleslady in a general store.  Both she and William are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Housatonic.

Their three children:

1.  LILLIAN AUGUSTA SNYDER was born on June 29, 1882 in Housatonic. She died in Great Barrington at 5 years old on February 19, 1888 due to cholera infantum. She is buried in Housatonic.

2.  MAUDE L. SNYDER was born on January 1, 1885 in Housatonic; she died there on January 29, 1983. She married Atwood Amos Gallup (born April 22, 1883 in Bulwer, Quebec, Canada) on August 31, 1909. In the 1920 federal census of Main Street, Great Barrington, we find Atwood working as an electrician for an Electric Light Station.

[In my day, they lived with Aunt Eliza in Housatonic. -AMS]

Atwood died there on November 4, 1967. They are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Housatonic. Maude and Atwood Gallup had two children:

a.  WILLIAM SYNDER GALLUP was born on November 30, 1910 in Housatonic; he died on November 27, 1996 in Leesburg, FL. He married Frances H. Smith (born June 2, 1910 in St, Albans, VT). Frances died on July 19, 1985 in Housatonic.
