Richard's second family
[NOTE: The majority of this
information comes through the diligent effort of Dorothy Goodhind of
Amherst. -AMS]
Following the death of his first wife,
Richard was left with five daughters. He re-married to 21 year old Mary L.
Stickles (born in Hillsdale, NY on April 13, 1858) on March 15, 1879 in
Dalton, MA.
[One of the interesting things to
note, many years after the event itself, is that Mary Stickles married
Richard Goodhind just 4 days after her father, Jacob, died in on March 11,
1879 in Pittsfield. Even now, one wonders about the relationship
between the two events. -TSG]
[I am told that theirs was a
difficult household. Mary was fairly close in age to the eldest
daughter, Rose, and they did not always see eye-to-eye. Richard did
not help matters. One anecdote passed down from my Aunt Dorothy
Goodhind is that he would say at the dinner table, with the children
present, "Mary Stickles. Please pass the pickles." This of
course delighted the children and upset the new Mrs. Goodhind -TSG]
After Richard's death in 1911, Mary
re-married to John R. Histon (born in Falls Village, Canaan, CT on
February 2, 1858) on April 30, 1912 in Pittsfield, MA. They are supposed
to have known each other when much younger; John too had been
previously married to Wealtha Stickels. He died on October 31, 1918 and is buried in the Histon lot in Union Cemetery in Mellenville, NY. Mary died in Pittsfield
on September 20, 1941 in the Berkshire County Home for Aged Women, now
called Berkshire Place. She is buried in Union Cemetery, Mellenville, NY
in a lot sold to Mrs. Lucinda Stickles on March 13, 1888.
[Of her six years married to John
Histon, Mary is reported to have remarked, "They were the happiest
times of my life." -TSG]
Richard and Mary had two children:
G. BERTHA
MAY GOODHIND was born on December 17, 1881 in Huntington, MA
and died there on September 18, 1882 of cholera infantum. She is buried
beside Richard’s first wife, Charlotte, in Dalton, MA.
[Although Bertha May was born
AFTER Murray, I have placed her first here rather than at the end of the
next section because Murray's family is so large. I did not want her
birth and death lost amongst the other family. -TSG]
F.
MURRAY MALCOLM GOODHIND was born May 22, 1880, supposedly in
Dalton, MA. However, there is no record of his birth there. He married
Henrietta May Hawver (born July 9, 1891 in South Lee,
daughter of Gilbert Hawver, Jr. and the widow Mary Annis Murphy Smith) on September 24,
1907 in State Line, NY.
[They could not be
married in Massachusetts, as she was underage. The building in which they
were married was renowned locally, as one half of it sat in New York state
and the other half in Massachusetts. She did have the permission of her
father, Gilbert Hawver, for the marriage. Murray was 27 years old and
Henrietta was 16. They had evidently met in the papermill where
Murray worked and his father was Superintnendent. -TSG]
[During the births of their
many children, I am told that someone asked about other Goodhinds in
Western Massachusetts. The answer he received was that Murray and
Henrietta were "over in Lee, working on a baseball team." -TSG]
Murray died in Amherst, MA on
March 19, 1956; Henrietta died there on March 6, 1981. They are buried in
South Amherst, MA.
They had thirteen (13)
children:
